Dr.S.Shankar M.E., Ph.D (IIT Madras)

Dr. S. Shankar obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (2001) and Master’s degree in Engineering Design (2002) from Bharathiar University, where he secured University Rank I in Engineering Design. He earned his Ph.D. in Machine Design/Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 2008. Following this, he served as a Senior R&D Engineer at CONVERTEAM EDC Pvt Ltd., Chennai/USA for two and a half years. Since 2010, he has been associated with Kongu Engineering College, where he worked as an Associate Professor (2010–2016), later becoming a Professor in Mechatronics Engineering. He headed the R&D Cell (July 2019 – November 2023) and subsequently led the Mechatronics Engineering Department (November 2023 – April 2024). In June 2024, he founded the ProMind Research Academy to empower faculty members in advancing quality research. Dr. Shankar has published over 200+ international journal papers indexed in SCOPUS/SCI across reputed publishers including ASME, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Springer, World Scientific, SAGE, and Inderscience. His research expertise spans computational contact mechanics, ergonomics, environmental health and safety, biomechanics, tribology, finite element methods, and composites. He has successfully executed 11 R&D projects worth over ₹115 lakhs, funded by agencies such as UGC, AICTE, SERB, DST, ICMR, DHR, and IE(I). He is also the inventor of two granted patents. He has guided 7 Ph.D. scholars, 26 postgraduate students, and 40 undergraduate project batches, with 1 Ph.D. scholar currently under his supervision. He is an active member of MYTRIBOS, ISTE, IPHA, TSI, and IEI. His distinguished awards include the AICTE Career Award for Young Teachers, ISTE Best M.Tech Thesis Award in Mechanical Engineering, the Young Engineer Award (2012–2013) from IE(I), Kolkata, Best Engineering Academician Award from IE(I), Erode, NPTEL SPOC Award, and multiple Best Researcher and Best Faculty Awards from Kongu Engineering College. Dr. Shankar has been consistently recognized among the “Top 2% Scientists in the World” (Stanford–Elsevier Database) in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025, and was also included in the Career-long list for 2025. His Google Scholar metrics include an h-index of 37, an i10-index of 97, and 6000+ citations. He has delivered over 300 expert lectures across various institutes on topics such as problem formulation, refereed journal identification, research paper writing, citation analysis, ergonomics in design, and computational biomechanics. During his tenure as Head of the R&D Cell, Kongu Engineering College achieved remarkable growth: Scopus publications increased from 200 to 1200+ per year, SCI publications rose from 160 to 400+ per year, and the average value of R&D project proposals grew from ₹1 crore to ₹2.5 crores annually. As Head of Mechatronics Engineering, he successfully steered the department to achieve six years of NBA accreditation under Tier I.
